WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, Central Securities reported to the Attorney General of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information in its systems may have been accessed. According to the breach notice, on May 20, 2024, Central Securities became aware of unauthorized activity within its internal systems. As a result, Central Securities launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, Central Securities learned that an unauthorized third party gained access to Central Securities’ internal systems on or about April 17, 2024, seemingly through a legitimate account of one of its vendors that had authorized access to its systems.1 The unauthorized third party then used Central Securities’ vendor’s access to remove certain data from its systems around May 20, 2024.1 As a result, Central Securities began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Address
- Stockholder account number
On September 30, 2024, Central Securities began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to Massachusetts residents, Central securities is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific type of sensitive information impacted and 24 months of complimentary credit monitoring services.
