WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, it was reported by multiple online sources that MoneyGram had experienced a network outage impacting the ability of consumers to use its services and access their funds. Additionally, MoneyGram released a statement on September 23, 2024, acknowledging the incident, saying it “…identified a cybersecurity issue affecting certain of our systems. Upon detection, we immediately launched an investigation and took protective steps to address it, including proactively taking systems offline which impacted network connectivity. We are working with leading external cybersecurity experts and coordinating with law enforcement.”1 As of September 24, 2024, MoneyGram’s website remains offline and the specific nature of the cybersecurity incident has not been disclosed, including confirmation of whether the incident resulted in a data breach.
