Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating The Kendal Corporation (“Kendal”) regarding its recent data breach. The Kendal data breach may have involved sensitive personal identifiable information belonging to an undetermined number of individuals.
ABOUT THE KENDAL COROPORATION:
Kendal is a not-for-profit senior care system based in Delaware. Beginning in the late 1960s, the Kendal system is comprised of various senior care communities. While every Kendal community is considered an “Affiliate” of the larger Kendal system, each one is locally owned, managed and led.2 Today, Kendal communities are designed to meet different needs and tastes, and range from park-like campuses in small college towns to apartment living near metropolitan areas.2 Many Kendal affiliates are Lifecare Communities which provide housing, residential amenities and an array of wellness and health care services.2 Headquartered in Newark, Delaware, Kendal employs over 1,000 individuals.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, Kendal reported to the Attorney General of New Hampshire that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information in its systems may have been accessed. According to the breach notice, on June 30, 2024, Kendal discovered unusual activity on its computer network. As a result, Kendal launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, Kendal learned that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been compromised by an unauthorized actor between June 26 and June 30, 2024. As a result, Kendal began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. The files impacted included information related to Kendal at Home members stored on the Kendal network.1 The exact type of personal information potentially exposed has not been made publicly available by Kendal. However, according to state reporting guidelines, “personal information” can include the following types of information:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Driver’s license or other government identification number
- Account number, credit or debit card number, in combination with any required security code, access code, or password that would permit access to an individual’s financial account
On September 11, 2024, Kendal began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to New Hampshire residents, Kendal is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific type of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
