The Tech Interactive Data Breach Investigation
Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating The Tech Interactive (“The Tech”) regarding its recent data breach. The Tech data breach may have involved sensitive personal identifiable information belonging to an undetermined number of individuals.
ABOUT THE TECH INTERACTIVE:
The Tech is a nonprofit family-friendly science and technology center based in California. Opened in 1998, The Tech contains 130,000 square feet of hands-on activities, exploratory labs and design challenge experiences as well as interactive exhibits on climate change, robotics, innovations in healthcare, cybersecurity and more.3 Additionally, The Tech is home to the largest IMAX Dome Theater on the West Coast, offering educational films and the occasional Hollywood blockbuster.3 Today, The Tech has an attendance of over 250,000 people per year and has welcomed more than 10 million visitors since its opening.3 Located in San Jose, California, The Tech employs over 200 individuals.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, The Tech reported to the Attorney General of California that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. According to the breach notice, earlier this year The Tech became aware of suspicious activity on its computer network. As a result, The Tech launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, The Tech learned that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been viewed and obtained by an unauthorized actor between April 9 and April 13, 2024. As a result, The Tech began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. On July 9, 2024, The Tech completed this review. The exact type of personal information potentially exposed has not been made publicly available by The Tech. However, according to state reporting guidelines, “personal information” can include the following types of information:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Driver’s license number, California ID card number, tax identification number, passport number, military ID number, or other unique ID number issued on a government document
- Account number or credit or debit card number, in combination with any required security code, access code, or password that would permit access to an individual’s financial account
- Medical information
- Health insurance information
- Unique biometric data generated from measurements or technical analysis of human body characteristics, such as a fingerprint, retina, or iris image, used to authenticate a specific individual
- Genetic data
On September 16, 2024, The Tech began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to California residents, The Tech is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific type of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
