WHAT HAPPENED?

On September 12, 2024, Fortinet announced that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal information belonging to its customers may have been accessed. According to the breach notice posted on its website, an individual gained unauthorized access to a limited number of files stored on Fortinet’s instance of a third-party cloud-based shared file drive, which included limited data related to Fortinet customers.1 As a result, Fortinet launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident. According to outside sources, a threat actor claims to have stolen 440GB of data from Fortinet’s Azure Sharepoint instance and then shared credentials to an alleged S3 bucket where the stolen data is stored for other threat actors to download.2 These claims have not been confirmed by Fortinet.

 

As of September 13, 2024, Fortinet has not publicly disclosed the type of personal information impacted in the breach. However, Fortinet says it has communicated directly with individuals who were impacted by the breach. A link to the form breach notification that Fortinet posted to its website is below.
