Access Sports Medicine & Orthopaedics Data Breach Investigation

Founded in 1976, Access Sports specializes in the in the prevention and treatment of disorders, injuries, and illness to the muscles, bones and joints.3 Today, Access Sports’ primary areas of care include knee, hip, shoulder, elbow, hand, wrist, foot, ankle, and spine injuries, joint replacements, regenerative medicine, interventional pain management, sports medicine, internal medicine, physical and occupational therapy, and more. Headquartered in Exeter, New Hampshire, Access Sports has five additional locations and employs over 50 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Access Sports reported to the Attorney General of Maine that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed. According to the breach notice, on May 10, 2024, Access Sports detected suspicious activity within its network environment. As a result, Access Sports launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, Access Sports learned that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been compromised by an unauthorized actor during the incident on May 10, 2024. As a result, Access Sports began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Financial information
  • Medical information
  • Health insurance information

 

On September 11, 2024, Access Sports began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to Maine residents, Access Sports is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific type of sensitive information impacted and 12 months of complimentary credit monitoring services.
