Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Surgery Center of Mid Florida (‘SCOMF”) regarding its recent data breach. The SCOMF data breach involved sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information belonging to an undetermined number of individuals.
ABOUT SURGERY CENTER OF MID FLORIDA:
SCOMF is an ambulatory surgery center based in Florida. Today, SCOMF specializes in gastroenterology and ophthalmology, and offers a variety of services, including flexible sigmoidoscopy, colonoscopy, upper endoscopy, cataract surgery, glaucoma surgery, blepharoplasty, strabismus, ectropion repair, pterygium, and nasal duct probing. Additionally, SCOMF is licensed by the State of Florida Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) and has attained full accreditation by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC).3 Headquartered in Ocala, Florida, SCOMF has one location.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, SCOMF reported to the Attorney General of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed. According to the breach notice, on or about February 21, 2024, SCOMF experienced a network encryption event. As a result, SCOMF launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, SCOMF learned that an unauthorized third party was able to gain access to its network through one of its IT vendors. As a result, SCOMF began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Address
- Date of birth
- Financial account information
- Medical information (e.g., medical history, diagnoses, treatments, dates of service)
- Health insurance information (e.g., account number, insurance policy number, billing and claims information)
On July 22, 2024, SCOMF began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notices sent to Massachusetts residents, SCOMF is providing some impacted individuals with a list of the specific type of sensitive information impacted and 24 months of complimentary credit monitoring services.
