WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Brownell reported to the Attorney General of Maine that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information in its systems may have been accessed. According to the breach notice, last year Brownell discovered suspicious activity within its computer systems. As a result, Brownell launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, Brownell learned that sensitive personal data may have been viewed or taken from its systems between November 10 and November 26, 2023. As a result, Brownell began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. The exact type of personal information potentially exposed has not been made publicly available by Brownell. However, according to state reporting guidelines, “personal information” can include the following types of information:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Driver’s license or state identification card number
  • Account number, credit card number or debit card number
  • Account passwords or personal identification numbers or other access codes

On July 30, 2024, Brownell began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notices sent to Maine residents, Brownell is providing some impacted individuals with a list of the specific type of sensitive information impacted and 24 months of complimentary credit monitoring services.
