Peterson Cat Data Breach Investigation

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Peterson Cat reported to the Attorney General of Maine that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. According to the breach notice, between June 27 and June 28, 2023, Peterson Cat discovered suspicious activity within its network. As a result, Peterson Cat launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, Peterson Cat learned that sensitive personal information may have been viewed or taken from its systems between June 27 and June 28, 2023. As a result, Peterson Cat began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. On May 8, 2024, Peterson Cat completed this review. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Driver’s license number
  • US military or other federally issued ID number
  • Passport number
  • Financial account information
  • Medical information

 

On August 1, 2024, Peterson Cat began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to Maine residents and the notice posted on its website, Peterson Cat is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific type of sensitive information impacted and 12 months of complimentary credit monitoring services.
