Northeast Rehabilitation Hospital Network Data Breach Investigation

Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Neuro Rehab Associates, Inc., which does business as Northeast Rehabilitation Hospital Network (“NRHN”), regarding its recent data breach. The NRHN data breach involved sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information belonging to an undetermined number of individuals.

NRHN is a rehabilitation healthcare network based in New Hampshire. Founded in 1984, NRHN provides inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation care for disabling injuries or illnesses.2 Today, NRHN’s inpatient services include custom recovery programs for strokes, brain injuries, amputations, neurological conditions, spinal cord injuries, and orthopedic conditions. Additionally, NRHN’s outpatient services include physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, spine therapy, pediatric therapy, and hand and orthopedic therapy. Headquartered in Salem, New Hampshire, NRHN has over 25 locations across New Hampshire and Massachusetts and employs over 1,000 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, NRHN reported to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. According to the breach notice, NRHN detected suspicious activity within its network on or around May 22, 2024. As a result, NRHN launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, NRHN learned that sensitive personal information may have been viewed or taken from its systems between May 13 and May 22, 2024. As a result, NRHN began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Contact information
  • Date of birth
  • Driver’s license/state issued identification numbers
  • Financial account information
  • Medical information (e.g., patient identification numbers, medical record numbers, diagnosis and treatment information)
  • Health insurance information

 

As a result, NRHN will begin mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice posted on its website, NRHN is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific type of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
