Sheet Metal Workers Local Union #83 Data Breach Investigation

Founded in 1896, Sheet Metal Workers Local Union #83 supplies qualified mechanics and apprentices to over 30 local contractors who perform all facets of sheet metal work including, but not limited to: heating, ventilating, skylights, cornice work, lockers, spiral or oval duct, kitchen equipment and testing and balancing systems.2 Additionally, Sheet Metal Workers Local Union #83 serves as an educational institution that trains future and current sheet metal workers through a five year apprentice program and journeyperson upgrade training.2  Today, Sheet Metal Workers Local Union #83 is comprised of over 400 highly skilled sheet metal workers and has access to at least 180,000 members who are affiliated with its International Association.2 Headquartered in Clifton Park, New York, Sheet Metal Workers Local Union #83’s current jurisdiction covers the counties of: Albany, Clinton, Columbia, Essex, Franklin, Fulton, Greene, Hamilton, Montgomery, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie, Warren and Washington.2

WHAT HAPPENED?

On March 25, 2024, Sheet Metal Workers Local Union #83 discovered that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed. Through its investigation, Sheet Metal Workers Local Union #83 determined that an unauthorized third party accessed this sensitive information through an employee’s email account between March 18 and March 26, 2024. On May 24, 2024, Sheet Metal Workers Local Union #83 began notifying individuals whose information may have been impacted. The type of personal information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Address
  • Contact information (e.g., phone number, email address)
  • Date of birth
  • Driver’s license or state ID number
  • Passport number
  • Financial information (e.g., financial account number, routing number, financial institution name, credit/debit card information)
  • Medical information (e.g., treatment/diagnosis information, prescription information, provider name, medical record number, treatment cost)
  • Medicare/Medicaid number
  • Health insurance information
