Johns Hopkins Health System is a not-for-profit healthcare organization offering medical care to individuals through its academically based health system. Included in Johns Hopkins Health System are the world-renowned The Johns Hopkins Hospital, Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, Howard County General Hospital, Suburban Hospital, Sibley Memorial Hospital, The Johns Hopkins All Children’s Health System, Johns Hopkins Community Physicians, The Johns Hopkins Medical Services Corporation, and Johns Hopkins Medical Management Corporation. Additionally, Johns Hopkins Health System collaborates with The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine to operate Johns Hopkins Medicine, which treats more than 2.8 patients annually.
WHAT HAPPENED?
On May 31, 2023, Johns Hopkins experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal information and financial information in its systems may have been accessed. Through its investigation, Johns Hopkins determined that an unauthorized actor accessed this sensitive information by targeting a vulnerability in a software tool used by Johns Hopkins. While much information is still unknown about the breach, news organizations are reporting that Johns Hopkins notified members of the Johns Hopkins community that the data breach may have impacted the information of Johns Hopkins employees, students, and/or patients. Since discovering the data breach, Johns Hopkins has posted a notice of the data breach on its website, which states that, once its investigation is complete, Johns Hopkins will notify individuals impacted by the data breach and provide those individuals with credit monitoring services.
