Middlebury College Data Breach Investigation

Middlebury College is a private liberal arts educational institution located in Middlebury, Vermont. Founded in 1800, Middlebury College is one of the oldest liberal arts colleges in the country. In addition to Bachelor of Arts programs in a wide range of disciplines, including literature, history, mathematics, and linguistics, Middlebury College also offers graduate degrees in international studies and literature, literacy, and pedagogy. Each summer, Middlebury College hosts the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference, which is one of the oldest writers’ conferences in the country. Today, Middlebury College has 2,800 undergraduate students and 700 graduate students.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, Middlebury College discovered that two of its third-party service providers, National Student Clearhouse and the Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association, experienced data breaches in which the personal identifiable information of Middlebury College students, faculty, and staff may have been accessed. While the investigation is ongoing, Middlebury College determined that an unauthorized actor may have accessed this sensitive information through a cyber-attack on the MOVEit file transfer software used by National Student Clearinghouse or Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association around May 29, 2023. At present, the type of information exposed has not been made publicly available.
