WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, Alpine Lumber reported to the Attorney General of Vermont that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its care may have been compromised. According to the breach notice, on December 22, 2025, Alpine Lumber determined that certain devices in its network were encrypted with ransomware.1 As a result, Alpine Lumber launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, Alpine Lumber confirmed that sensitive personal information in its network may have been accessed and acquired by an unauthorized third party between December 14 and December 22, 2025. As a result, Alpine Lumber began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Date of birth
- Health insurance plan enrollment information
- Health insurance policy number
- Medical information
- Driver’s license number or state identification card number
- Passport number
- Other government-issued identification number
- Financial account information
- Payment card information
As a result of the breach, Alpine Lumber began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals and posted notice of the breach on its website. Based on the breach notice sent to Vermont residents, Alpine Lumber is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
