Legal Aid Service of Broward County Data Breach Investigation

Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Legal Aid Service of Broward County (“Legal Aid”) regarding its recent data breach. The Legal Aid data breach involved sensitive personal information and protected health information belonging to an undetermined number of individuals.

ABOUT LEGAL AID SERVICE OF BROWARD COUNTY:

Legal Aid is a non-profit law firm based in Florida. Founded in 1974, Legal Aid provides a range of free legal services to underserved individuals and families in Broward County, including services for consumer rights, housing rights, immigration cases, homeless legal rights, victims of crimes, children’s advocacy programs, and more.2,3 In 2022, over 5,800 individuals and families received legal assistance from Legal Aid.2 Headquartered in Plantation, Florida, Legal Aid employs over 50 individuals.3

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Legal Aid announced that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its care may have been compromised. According to the breach notice, on or about February 10, 2025, Legal Aid experienced unauthorized access to an email account.1 As a result, Legal Aid launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, Legal Aid confirmed that sensitive personal information in the emails may have been accessed and/or acquired by an unauthorized third party during the breach. As a result, Legal Aid began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Driver’s license or state identification number
  • Other government identification number
  • Bank account information
  • Credit or debit card information
  • Biometric information
  • Medical information
  • Health insurance policy information

 

As a result of the breach, Legal Aid posted notice of the breach on its website. Based on the website breach notice, Legal Aid is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
