Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating WorldOne Inc., which does business as Sermo (“Sermo”), regarding its recent data breach. The Sermo data breach involved sensitive personal information belonging to over 2,600 individuals.

Sermo is a social media and networking platform for physicians based in New York. Founded in 2000, Sermo provides a social media platform for physicians to network, discuss medicine, seek second medical opinions, review pharmaceuticals, participate in medical surveys, and more.2,3 In total, Sermo engages with over 1 million healthcare professionals across 150 countries.2,3 Headquartered in New York, New York, Sermo employs over 600 individuals and operates additional offices in Mexico, the UK, Spain, Lithuania, Japan, China, and South Africa.3,4
WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, Sermo reported to the Attorney General of Maine that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information in its care may have been compromised. According to the breach notice, on April 10, 2024, Sermo experienced a power outage at its data center in Denmark that was determined to be a ransomware event.1 As a result, Sermo launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, Sermo confirmed that sensitive personal information in its network may have been accessed and acquired by an unauthorized third party between March 19 and April 10, 2024. As a result, Sermo began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
On February 9, 2026, Sermo began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to Maine residents, Sermo is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
