Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum Data Breach Investigation

CBMM is a maritime museum based in Maryland. Founded in 1965, CBMM is dedicated to preserving the history, environment, and culture of the Chesapeake Bay region and features a range of exhibitions and on-the-water experiences related to local maritime and regional culture.2,3,4 Additionally, CBMM operates various maritime services, including ship docking, boat purchases, cruises, wedding and event programs, etc.2 Headquartered in St. Michaels, Maryland, CBMM employs over 50 individuals.3

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, CBMM reported to the Attorney General of Maine that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information in its care may have been compromised. According to the breach notice, on August 9, 2024, CBMM became aware of suspicious activity in its environment.1 As a result, CBMM launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, CBMM confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired by an unauthorized third party between August 8 and August 9, 2024. As a result, CBMM began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Financial account information

 

On December 30, 2025, CBMM began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to Maine residents, CBMM is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
