WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Brightstar reported to the Attorney General of Maine that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its care may have been compromised. According to the breach notice, on November 17, 2024, Brightstar and IGT Group discovered that an unauthorized third party gained access to internal corporate systems.1 As a result, Brightstar launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, Brightstar confirmed that the sensitive personal information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed by an unauthorized third party during the breach.1 As a result, Brightstar began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. On August 21, 2025, Brightstar completed this review. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Contact information
  • Government identification documents or government identification number such as driver’s license number
  • Financial account information
  • Health data
  • Additional information collected in connection with Brightstar or a lottery or gaming venue supported by Brightstar

On October 3, 2025, Brightstar began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice being sent to Maine residents, Brightstar is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.1 A link to the letters that Brightstar filed with the Attorney General of Maine is below.
