Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh Data Breach Investigation

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, the Jewish Federation reported to the Attorney General of Maine that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its care may have been compromised. According to the breach notice, on November 12, 2024, the Jewish Federation experienced unauthorized access to its network.1 As a result, the Jewish Federation launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, the Jewish Federation confirmed that the sensitive personal information and protected health information in its care may have been accessed or acquired by an unauthorized third party between November 5 and November 12, 2024.1 As a result, the Jewish Federation began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes: 6 

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Tax identification number
  • Driver’s license or government issued identification number
  • Date of birth
  • Account access credentials
  • Financial information
  • Health insurance information
  • Medical information

 

On September 19, 2025, the Jewish Federation began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Additionally, the Jewish Federation posted notice of the data breach to its website.4 Based on the breach notice being sent to Maine residents, the Jewish Federation is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services. 1 A link to the letters that the Jewish Federation filed with the Attorney General of Maine is below.
