Cornwell Quality Tools Data Breach Investigation

Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Cornwell Quality Tools (“Cornwell”) regarding its recent data breach. Cornwell is an automotive hand tools manufacturer based in Ohio.3 Founded in 1919, Cornwell sells tools, including pliers, ratchets, wrenches, and more, through a nationwide network of franchise dealers who operate mobile tool stores.2,3 Headquartered in Wadsworth, Ohio, Cornwell employs over 200 individuals.3

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Cornwell reported to the Attorney General of Maine that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been compromised. According to the breach notice, on December 20, 2024, Cornwell became aware of unusual activity within its computer network.1 As a result, Cornwell launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, Cornwell confirmed that the sensitive personal information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired by an unauthorized third party on or around December 12, 2024.1 As a result, Cornwell began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. On August 4, 2024, Cornwell completed this review. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes: 4

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Financial account information
  • Driver’s license number
  • Medical information

 

On September 4, 2025, Cornwell began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice being sent to Maine residents, Cornwell is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services. 1 A link to breach notification letters that Cornwell filed with the Attorney General of Maine is below.
