New York Blood Center Enterprises Data Breach Investigation

Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating New York Blood Center Enterprises (“NYBCE”) regarding its recent data breach. The NYBCE data breach may have involved sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information belonging to an undetermined number of individuals.

ABOUT NEW YORK BLOOD CENTER ENTERPRISES:

NYBCE is non-profit blood center based in New York. Founded in 1964, NYBCE is one of the largest, community-based blood centers in the world, and provides hospitals and patients with blood and stem cell products, as well as related medical and consultative services.2 Headquartered in New York, New York, NYBCE employs over 1,000 individuals and, along with its partner organizations within the U.S., provides services and products to local communities of more than 45 million people across the country.3

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, NYBCE reported to the Attorney General of Maine that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been compromised. According to the breach notice, on January 26, 2025, NYBCE experienced a cybersecurity incident that affected its internal computer systems.1 As a result, NYBCE launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, NYBCE confirmed that the sensitive personal information and protected health records of employees and patients in its systems may have been accessed and acquired by an unauthorized third party between January 20 and January 26, 2025.1 As a result, NYBCE began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Driver’s License number or other government identification card number
  • Financial account information
  • Health information
  • Test results

On September 5, 2025, NYBCE began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to Maine residents, NYBCE is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services. 1 A link to breach notification letters that NYBCE filed with the Attorney General of Maine is below.
