WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Laurel Cancer Care discovered that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive protected health information in its systems may have been accessed. On August 12, 2025, Laurel Cancer Care filed official notice of the data breach with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office for Civil Rights.1 Though much information is still not known about the Laurel Cancer Care breach, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ reporting guidelines require entities to report data breaches when they involve protected health information. Therefore, it is likely that the Laurel Cancer Care breach included the protected health information belonging to over 1500 individuals. As a result of the data breach, Laurel Cancer Care may soon begin notifying individuals whose information may have been impacted.
