Carter Federal Credit Union Data Breach Investigation

Carter Credit Union is a credit union company based in Louisiana. Founded in 1954, Carter Credit Union provides credit and loan services for individuals and businesses, including savings and checking accounts, home and auto loans, student loans, and business accounts.2 Headquartered in Shreveport, Louisiana, Carter Credit Union employs over 50 individuals across its twelve branch locations.3

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Carter Credit Union reported to the Attorney General of California that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its care may have been compromised. According to the breach notice, on July 2, 2025, Carter Credit Union learned that an unauthorized third party gained temporary access to its network.1 As a result, Carter Credit Union launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, Carter Credit Union confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been accessed by an unauthorized third party between June 25 and July 2, 2025. As a result, Carter Credit Union began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:4

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Driver’s license number or State ID card number
  • Passport number
  • Financial information (account numbers, account history, credit card or debit card number, retirement/401(k) benefits information)
  • Medical records
  • Health insurance information

 

As a result of the breach, Carter Credit Union has begun mailing notice to affected individuals. Additionally, Carter Credit Union posted notice of the breach on its website. According to the notice sent to California residents, Carter Credit Union is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and 12 months of complimentary credit monitoring services.1 A link to the breach notice that Carter Credit Union filed with the Attorney General of California is below.
