The Salvation Army Data Breach Investigation

The Salvation Army is a non-profit Christian social services organization based in Virginia. Founded in 1865, The Salvation Army provides social assistance through food, shelter, clothing, eviction prevention assistance, emergency disaster relief, and rehabilitation.3 Additionally, The Salvation Army’s services include spiritual enrichment and summer youth programs. 3 Headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia, The Salvation Army employs over 10,000 individuals across the organization’s 7,000 centers of operation in the United States. 3

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, The Salvation Army reported to the Attorney General of Vermont that the sensitive personal identifiable information in its care may have been compromised. According to the breach notice, on or around May 24, 2025, The Salvation Army detected a network security incident in which an unauthorized third party accessed its network environment.1 As a result, The Salvation Army launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, The Salvation Army confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired by an unauthorized third party during the breach. As a result, The Salvation Army began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. On August 8, 2025, The Salvation Army completed this review. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Driver’s License number

 

On August 27, 2025, The Salvation Army began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to Vermont residents, The Salvation Army is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and 12 months of complimentary credit monitoring services.
