WHAT HAPPENED?
On August 5, 2025, SmartRent reported to the Attorney General of Maine that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information in its systems may have been compromised. According to the breach notice, on July 8, 2025, SmartRent received notification from SMC regarding an incident SMC discovered on May 10, 2025. This incident, which occurred sometime in February 2025, involved unauthorized access to SMC’s internal share drive through a phishing campaign that successfully bypassed SMC’s detection systems. 1
This drive included SmartRent documents and supporting materials that SMC downloaded from a secure portal in connection with its 401k audit that included personal information belonging to SmartRent current and former employees from 2019 to 2024. The parameters of the audit included current and former employees that participate in SmartRent’s 401k retirement savings plan as well as employees that elected not to avail themselves of that benefit. As a result, SmartRent launched an investigation and engaged directly with SMC to understand the full scope of the breach to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation in collaboration with SMC, SmartRent determined that an unauthorized party gained access to SMC’s internal share drive.1 As a result, SmartRent began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Address
- Sex
- Marital status
- Date of birth
- Employment records
On August 7, 2025, SmartRent will begin mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to Maine residents, SmartRent is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
