WHAT HAPPENED?
On July 10, 2025, The Burney Company reported to the Attorney General of New Hampshire that is had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information in its care may have been compromised. According to the breach notice, on May 14, 2025, The Burney Company discovered that certain clients did not receive their tax refunds or had direct deposit information altered by an unknown source.1 As a result, The Burney Company launched an investigation into suspicious activity.
Through its investigation, The Burney Company confirmed that sensitive personal identifiable information belonging to clients in its systems may have been accessed by an unauthorized individual during the breach.1 As a result, The Burney Company began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Driver’s license number
- Bank account or routing number
On July 10, 2025, The Burney Company began mailing data breach notification letters to the impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to New Hampshire residents, The Burney Company is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
