WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, Southwest Urology discovered that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive protected health information in its systems may have been accessed. On June 27, 2025, Southwest Urology filed official notice of the data breach with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office for Civil Rights. 1 Though much information is still not known about the Southwest Urology breach, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ reporting guidelines require entities to report data breaches when they involve protected health information. Therefore, it is likely that the Southwest Urology breach included the protected health information belonging to over 7,200 individuals. As a result of the data breach, Southwest Urology may soon begin notifying individuals whose information may have been impacted.
