WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, BNY reported to the Attorney General of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information in its care may have been compromised. According to the breach notice, on March 20, 2025, BNY discovered unauthorized access to information for a small number of accounts. 1 As a result, BNY launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, BNY confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems belonging to account holders may have been accessed and taken by an unauthorized third party between December 2024 and March 2025. As a result, BNY began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Home address
  • Email address
  • Telephone number
  • Date of birth
  • Account number and information

On June 4, 2025, BNY began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted Massachusetts residents. Based on the breach notice sent to Massachusetts residents, BNY is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
