WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, AES announced that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed. According to the breach notice it posted on its website, AES became aware of unauthorized activity. 1 As a result, AES launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, on May 2, 2025, AES confirmed that certain files containing private information may have been accessed or acquired by an unauthorized third party on or around June 14, 2025.1 As a result, Rio Marine began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Address
- Date of birth
- Driver’s license number
- Medical information (e.g., diagnosis/treatment information, insurance information)
- Financial information (e.g., account number, credit or debit card number)
On June 2, 2025, AES began notifying individuals via first-class mail. According to the breach notice posted on its website, AES is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
