Founded in 2003, Charleston Law offers a course of study with full-time and part-time enrollment options leading to a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree.3 Additionally, Charleston Law’s Admiralty and Maritime Law program brings students together with admiralty law specialties, and with the non-lawyer maritime professionals.3 Located in Charleston, South Carolina, Charleston Law has over 3,000 alumni.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, Charleston Law reported to the Attorney General of Maine that the sensitive personal identifiable information in its care may have been compromised. According to the breach notice, on February 5, 2025, Charleston Law discovered that an unauthorized party had obtained access to its internal network.1 As a result, Charleston Law launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, on April 29, 2025, Charleston Law confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired by an unauthorized third party between January 15 and February 10, 2025. As a result, Charleston Law began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
On May 29, 2025, Charleston Law began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to Maine residents, Charleston Law is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and 12 months of complimentary credit monitoring services.
