WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, The Smith Institute discovered that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive personal information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed. On May 28, 2025, The Smith Institute filed official notice of the data breach with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office for Civil Rights.1 Though much information is still not known about the Smith Institute breach, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ reporting guidelines require entities to report data breaches when they involve protected health information. Additionally, The Smith Institute reported the breach to the Attorney General of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and confirmed that Social Security numbers and medical records were impacted in the breach. As a result of the data breach, The Smith Institute may soon begin notifying individuals whose information may have been impacted.
