The Cooper Health System Data Breach Investigation

Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating The Cooper Health System (“Cooper”), regarding its recent data breach. The Cooper data breach may have involved sensitive personal information and protected health information belonging to over 57,000 individuals.

ABOUT THE COOPER HEALTH SYSTEM:

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Cooper announced that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its care may have been compromised. According to the breach notice, in May 2024, Cooper became aware of suspicious activity within its network environment.1 As a result, Cooper launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

On March 26, 2025, Cooper finished their review and confirmed that sensitive personal information and protected health information in its systems belonging to current and former Cooper patients was accessed and acquired without authorization by an unknown actor on or about May 14, 2024.1 As a result, Cooper began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Health insurance information
  • Treatment information
  • Medical record number
  • Medical history information

As a result of the breach, Cooper posted a notice of the incident on its website and has begun mailing notice letters to impacted individuals. Additionally, Cooper reported the breach to the Attorney General of Maine. Based on the breach notice sent to Maine residents, Cooper is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services. A link to the formal breach notifications that Cooper posted to its website and filed with the Attorney General of Maine are below.
