Marsh Properties Data Breach Investigation

Marsh Properties is a family-owned real estate company in North Carolina. Founded in 1926, Marsh Properties has helped local communities in North Carolina through their family and commercial real estate operations and development.3 Today, Marsh Properties owns and manages more than 2,000 residences, as well as shopping centers and office buildings.2 Headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, Marsh Properties employs more than 50 people.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Marsh Properties reported to the Attorney General of Vermont that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information in its care may have been compromised. According to the breach notice, on or around January 21, 2025, Marsh Properties became aware of potential unauthorized access into an employee email account.1 As a result, Marsh Properties launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

On April 24, 2025, Marsh Properties concluded their investigation and confirmed that the affected email account was subject to unauthorized access for a limited period of time, beginning January 14, 2025.1 As a result, Marsh Properties began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. The exact type of personal information potentially exposed has not been made publicly available by Marsh Properties. However, according to Vermont state reporting guidelines, “personal information” can include the following types of information:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Driver’s license or other government issued ID card numbers (e.g., individual taxpayer ID number, passport number, military ID card number)
  • Financial account number or credit or debit card number
  • Unique biometric data (e.g., fingerprint, retina or iris image, or other unique biometric representation)
  • Genetic information
  • Health record or records of a wellness program or similar program of health promotion or disease prevention (e.g., healthcare professional’s medical diagnosis or treatment of the consumer, health insurance policy number)

 

As a result of the data breach, on May 22, 2025, Marsh Properties began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to Vermont residents, Marsh Properties is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and 12 months of complimentary credit monitoring services.
