Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Sonrisas Dental Health (“Sonrisas”) regarding its recent data breach. The Sonrisas data breach involved sensitive personal information and protected health information belonging to over 15,000 individuals.
ABOUT SONRISAS DENTAL HEALTH:
Sonrisas is a nonprofit healthcare organization based in California. Founded in 2001, Sonrisas provides a range of healthcare services, including pediatric dentistry, adult dentistry, geriatric dentistry, sedation dentistry, oral health outreach, and special needs dentistry.2 In the 2022-2023 fiscal year, Sonrisas served over 4,500 patients and had over 13,000 total visits.2 Headquartered in San Mateo, California, Sonrisas has an additional location in Half Moon Bay, California, and employs over 10 individuals.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, Sonrisas discovered that it had experienced a data breach in which the sensitive protected health information in its systems may have been accessed. On May 2, 2025, Sonrisas filed official notice of the data breach with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office for Civil Rights.1 Though much information is still not known about the Sonrisas breach, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ reporting guidelines require entities to report data breaches when they involve protected health information. Therefore, it is likely that the Sonrisas breach included the protected health information belonging to over 15,600 individuals. As a result of the data breach, Sonrisas may soon begin notifying individuals whose information may have been impacted.
