Ally Bank is an online banking company based in Michigan. Today, Ally Bank is the direct banking subsidiary of Ally Financial, Inc.2 Headquartered in Detroit, Michigan, Ally Financial has additional locations across the United States and employs over 10,000 individuals.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, Ally reported to the Attorney General of Massachusetts that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information in its care may have been compromised. According to the breach notice, on April 7, 2025, Ally learned that an unauthorized party had gained access to a vendor’s system.1 As a result, Ally launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, Ally confirmed that sensitive personal information in the vendor’s systems belonging to Ally customers may have been accessed and acquired by an unauthorized third party during the breach. As a result, Ally began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Address
- Auto account number
On May 2, 2025, Ally began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to Massachusetts residents, Ally is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
