Sunsweet is a grower-owned marketing cooperative that sells dried fruit and juices. Founded in 1917, Sunsweet focuses on making products through prunes, such as dried prunes and prune juice.3 Along with prune products, Sunsweet offers a range of fruit products such as dried apricots, mangoes, cherries, and blueberries, as well as a variety of juices and trail snacks.2 Headquartered in Yuba City, California, Sunsweet employs over 500 individuals.3
WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, Sunsweet reported to the Attorney General of California that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its care may have been compromised. According to the breach notice, on December 11, 2024, Sunsweet became aware of an incident in which certain computer network systems were inaccessible.1 As a result, Sunsweet launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, Sunsweet confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been accessed by an unauthorized third party during the breach. As a result, Sunsweet began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Date of birth
- Medical information (e.g. treatment received)
- Insurance information (e.g. health insurance policy numbers)
On April 30, 2025, Sunsweet began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to California residents, Sunsweet is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and 24 months of complimentary credit monitoring services.
