Auxilio Mutuo Hospital Data Breach Investigation

Located in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Auxilio Mutuo Hospital employs over 2,000 individuals.2

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Auxilio Mutuo Hospital announced that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its care may have been compromised. According to the breach notice, on September 23, 2023, the Department of Homeland Security informed Auxilio Mutuo Hospital that its systems may be the target of a cyberattack.1 As a result, Auxilio Mutuo Hospital launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, Auxilio Mutuo Hospital confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems belonging to patients who visited between August 2022 and September 2023 may have been compromised by an unauthorized third party during the security breach. As a result, Auxilio Mutuo Hospital began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Driver’s license numbers
  • State identification number
  • Passport numbers
  • Billing, claims, and payment information (such as claim numbers, account numbers, billing codes, payment cards, financial and banking information, payments made, and balance due)
  • Medical information (such as medical record numbers, providers, diagnoses, medications, test results, images, care and treatment)
  • Health insurance information (such as primary, secondary, or other health plans/policies, insurance companies, member/group identification numbers, and government-Medicaid-Medicare payer identification numbers)

 

As a result of the data breach, Auxilio Mutuo Hospital posted a notice of the incident on its website.
