WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Alabama Ophthalmology Associates announced that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its care may have been accessed. According to the breach notice, on January 30, 2025, Alabama Ophthalmology Associates became aware of unusual activity within its network environment.1 As a result, Alabama Ophthalmology Associates launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, Alabama Ophthalmology Associates confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems belonging to patients may have been compromised by an unauthorized third party between January 22 and January 30, 2025. As a result, Alabama Ophthalmology Associates began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. On March 19, 2025, Alabama Ophthalmology Associates completed this review. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Treatment information
  • Medical record number
  • Medical history information
  • Health insurance information

 

As a result of the breach, Alabama Ophthalmology Associates posted a notice of the incident on its website. Additionally, on April 7, 2025, Alabama Ophthalmology Associates began sending breach notification letters to impacted individuals.
