Founded in 1985, Word & Brown began with a quoting platform for brokers that consolidated multiple carriers’ health insurance quotes into one presentation.3 Since then, Word & Brown has become specialized in COBRA compliance and administration, established the private health exchange CaliforniaChoice, added the online HR administration services program HRWow, and more.3 Headquartered in Orange, California, Word & Brown employs over 500 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Word & Brown announced that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its care may have been accessed and acquired. According to the breach notice, on October 23, 2024, Word & Brown identified suspicious activity related to an employee’s workstation.1 As a result, Word & Brown launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, Word & Brown confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been compromised by an unauthorized third party that had gained access to an employee’s workstation on or around October 23, 2024. As a result, Word & Brown began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Address
  • Date of birth
  • Email address
  • Gender
  • Financial account number
  • Taxpayer identification number
  • Medical plan type
  • Health insurance information, including billing information

 

As a result of the data breach, Word & Brown posted a notice of the incident on its website. Additionally, on March 24, 2025, Word & Brown began sending breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the website breach notice, Word & Brown is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted.
