Lake Washington Vascular Data Breach Investigation

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Lake Washington Vascular announced that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its care may have been accessed. According to the breach notice, on February 14, 2025, Lake Washington Vascular’s technology team was alerted that an outside intruder had accessed its network and was installing malware. 1 As a result, Lake Washington Vascular launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, Lake Washington Vascular discovered that the malware encrypted the electronic medical record and practice management systems on its servers.1 Additionally, Lake Washington Vascular confirmed that sensitive personal information within these systems belonging to approximately 30,000 patients may have been compromised. As a result, Lake Washington Vascular began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Medical information (e.g., diagnostic test results, medical history, diagnoses and treatment information)
  • Date of birth
  • Address
  • Government issued identification
  • Payer identification numbers

 

On March 10, 2025, Lake Washington Vascular posted a notice of the incident on its website. Additionally, Lake Washington Vascular will soon begin sending breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the website breach notice, Lake Washington Vascular is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted.
