St. Joseph’s College of Maine Data Breach Investigation

Founded in 1912 by the Sisters of Mercy, St. Joseph’s College welcomes students of all faiths.2 Today, St. Joseph’s College has an average enrollment of nearly 2,000 students annually both undergraduate and graduate programs.3 Competing as the Monks, St. Joseph’s College offers a variety of men’s, women’s, and club sports.4

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, St. Joseph’s College posted notice on its website that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information in its care may have been accessed. According to the breach notice, St. Joseph’s College recently identified unauthorized access to its network.1 As a result, St. Joseph’s College launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, St. Joseph’s College confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been compromised between December 15, 2023, and January 24, 2024. As a result, St. Joseph’s College began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Driver’s license or state identification
  • Passport
  • Financial account information
  • Medical information
  • Health insurance information

 

As a result of the data breach, St. Joseph’s College posted a notice of the incident on its website. Additionally, on March 21, 2025, St. Joseph’s College began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to Maine residents, St. Joseph’s College is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
