WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, OBI announced that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its care may have been accessed. According to the breach notice, on August 16, 2024, OBI became aware of a security incident impacting a portion of its environment.1 As a result, OBI launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, OBI confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems belonging to current and former workers and vendors of OBI or OBS may have been compromised during the breach. As a result, OBI began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:
For Vendors:
- Name
- Social Security numbers
- Taxpayer ID number
For Employees:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Address
- Date of birth
- Demographic information
- Government identifiers (e.g., driver’s license)
- Bank account information
- Medical information
- Health insurance and claims information
As a result of the data breach, OBI posted a notice of the incident on its website. Additionally, OBI has recently began sending breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the website breach notice, OBI is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
