College Hospital Costa Mesa Data Breach Investigation

Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating College Hospital Costa Mesa regarding its recent data breach. The College Hospital Costa Mesa data breach involved sensitive personal information and protected health information belonging to an undetermined number of individuals.

ABOUT COLLEGE HOSPITAL COSTA MESA:

College Hospital Costa Mesa is an acute care hospital based in California. Founded in 1987, College Hospital Costa Mesa offers medical/surgical services as well as a full spectrum of psychiatric services dedicated to the treatment of adult and adolescent patients.3 This full spectrum includes designated psychiatric beds as well as partial hospitalization services.3 Additionally, College Hospital Costa Mesa’s medical and surgical specialty services, such as medical detoxification from drugs and alcohol, compliment the tertiary care services of the large medical centers in Orange County.3 Headquartered in Costa Mesa, California, College Hospital Costa Mesa is a part of the larger College Health Enterprises healthcare system.4

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, College Hospital Costa Mesa announced that the sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its care may have been accessed. According to the breach notice, on September 17, 2024, College Hospital Costa Mesa learned of an incident that disrupted the operations of some of its IT systems.1 As a result, College Hospital Costa Mesa launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, College Hospital Costa Mesa confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been compromised between August 14, 2024, and September 17, 2024. As a result, College Hospital Costa Mesa began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Driver’s license number
  • Medical information (e.g., dates of service, diagnosis)
  • Additional information that could indicate that patients received services at College Hospital Costa Mesa

 

As a result of the data breach, College Hospital Costa Mesa posted a notice of the incident on its website. Additionally, on March 10, 2025, College Hospital Costa Mesa began sending breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the website breach notice, College Hospital Costa Mesa is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
