Asbury Theological Seminary Data Breach Investigation

Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Asbury Theological Seminary (“Asbury”) regarding its recent data breach. The Asbury data breach involved sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information belonging to an undetermined number of individuals.

ABOUT ASBURY THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY:

Asbury is a Christian graduate school based in Kentucky. Founded in 1923, Asbury offers over 30 degrees and certificate programs spanning multiple theological subjects, both in person and online.3 Today, Asbury enrolls more than 1,700 students, representing more than 80 denominations and 40 countries.4 Headquartered in Wilmore, Kentucky, Asbury has additional sites in Tennessee, Florida, Oklahoma, and Colorado, and employ over 200 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Asbury announced that the sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its care may have been accessed and acquired. According to the breach notice, on or around June 6, 2024, Asbury detected unauthorized access to its network environment.1 As a result, Asbury launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, Asbury confirmed that sensitive personal information in certain files in its network may have been compromised by an unauthorized third party between June 1 and June 6, 2024. As a result, Asbury began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Driver’s license number
  • Military ID number
  • S. alien registration number
  • Passport number
  • Financial information (e.g., bank account information, routing number, credit or debit card number, security code/PIN)
  • Medical information
  • Health insurance information

 

As a result of the data breach, Asbury posted a notice of the incident on its website. Additionally, Asbury has recently begun sending breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the website breach notice, Asbury is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and complimentary credit monitoring services.
