Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Legacy Professionals LLP (“Legacy”) regarding its recent data breach. The Legacy data breach may have involved sensitive personal information belonging to an undetermined number of individuals.

Legacy is a full-service accounting firm based in Illinois. Founded in 2003, Legacy specializes in audit and tax services for employee benefit plans, labor organizations, nonprofits, and other entities across 36 states.2 Today, Legacy’s accounting and audit services include audits, reviews, tax and compliance services, payroll compliance audits, and outsourced accounting support.2 In tax services, Legacy excels in preparation, planning, payroll tax filings, and representation before governmental agencies.2 Headquartered in Westchester, Illinois, Legacy has two additional locations in Indiana and Minnesota, and employs over 50 individuals.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, Legacy reported to the Attorney General of Maine that the sensitive personal identifiable information in its care may have been accessed and acquired. According to the breach notice, in late April 2024, Legacy learned of potentially suspicious activity related to certain data stored on its computer network.1 As a result, Legacy launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, Legacy confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been viewed and obtained by an unauthorized third party during the breach. As a result, Legacy began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. On January 6, 2025, Legacy completed this review. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Financial account numbers
On February 27, 2025, Legacy began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notices provided to the Maine residents, Legacy is providing affected individuals with a list of the information impacted and 24 months of complimentary credit monitoring services.
