Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Reading Cooperative Bank (“RCB”) regarding its recent data breach. The RCB data breach may have involved sensitive personal information and protected health information belonging to over 24,000 individuals.
ABOUT READING COOPERATIVE BANK:
RCB is a banking cooperative based in Massachusetts. Founded in 1886, RCB offers a variety of financial services and products to individuals and businesses, including checking and savings accounts, mortgages, home equity loans, consumer loans, financial planning, cash management, business loans, and online banking. Headquartered in Reading, Massachusetts, RCB has eleven additional branch locations in Massachusetts and employs over 50 individuals.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, RCB reported to the Attorney General of Maine that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed. According to the breach notice, RCB recently discovered that it had experienced a phishing attack that resulted in a data breach.1 As a result, RCB launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, RCB confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been compromised by an unauthorized third party through a bank employee’s email account on or around August 8, 2024. As a result, RCB began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Driver’s license information
- Financial account information
- Credit/Debit card numbers
- Medical records
On February 24, 2025, RCB began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to Maine residents, RCB is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and 24 months of complimentary credit monitoring services.
