WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Detroit PBS reported to the Attorney General of Maine that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. According to the breach notice, on September 1, 2024, Detroit PBS detected suspicious activity related to certain systems within its environment.1 As a result, Detroit PBS launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, Detroit PBS confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been viewed and obtained by an unauthorized third party through a malware attack between August 12 and August 31, 2024. As a result, Detroit PBS began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. On January 10, 2025, Detroit PBS completed this review. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Address
  • Driver’s license/state identification number
  • Financial account information
  • Usernames and passwords

On February 21, 2025, Detroit PBS began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals.
