Gossett Motor Cars Data Breach Investigation

Gossett is a privately owned automotive group based in Tennessee. Today, Gossett has various dealerships under its umbrella, including Gossett Volkswagen and Gossett Volkswagen of Germantown, Gossett Porsche, Audi Memphis, Gossett Kia Covington Pike and Gossett Kia South Mt. Moriah, Gossett Hyundai Covington Pike and Gossett Hyundai South Mt. Moriah, Gossett Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM Fiat, Gossett Mitsubishi, Genesis Memphis Covington Pike and INFINITI of Memphis.2 Additionally, each of Gossett’s dealerships keep a stock of used cars, trucks, and SUVs in its inventory.2 Headquartered in Memphis, Tennessee, Gossett employs over 500 individuals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Gossett reported to the Attorney General of Maine that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information in its systems may have been accessed. According to the breach notice, on or about December 28, 2024, Gossett detected that it was the target of a data security incident.1 As a result, Gossett launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, Gossett confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been compromised by an unauthorized third party on December 27, 2024. As a result, Gossett began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. On January 21, 2025, Gossett completed this review. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Address

 

On February 10, 2025, Gossett began mailing data breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to Maine residents, Gossett is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and 12 months of complimentary credit monitoring services.
