Strauss Borrelli PLLC, a leading data breach law firm, is investigating Charleston Area Medical Center (“CAMC”) regarding its recent data breach. The CAMC data breach may have involved sensitive personal information and protected health information belonging to an undetermined number of individuals.

Founded in 1972, CAMC is a nonprofit, 1,138-bed regional referral center made up of seven hospitals: CAMC General Hospital, CAMC Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, CAMC Memorial Hospital, CAMC Plateau Medical Center, CAMC Charleston Surgical Hospital, CAMC Teays Valley Hospital and CAMC Women and Children’s Hospital, as well as the CAMC Institute for Academic Medicine and the CAMC Foundation.3 Additionally, CAMC is a medical teaching facility, hosting, on any given day, more than 1,000 students in programs leading to degrees or certifications in health professions.3 Headquartered in Charleston, West Virginia, CAMC employs over 6,000 individuals.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Recently, CAMC announced that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed. According to the breach notice, on October 2, 2024, CAMC discovered that a small number of email users were the subject of a phishing attack.1 As a result, CAMC launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.
Through its investigation, CAMC confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been compromised by an unauthorized third party through a CAMC user’s email mailbox between October 2 and October 3, 2024. As a result, CAMC began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Date of birth
- Email address and phone number
- Driver’s license number
- Health information
- Health insurance information
As a result of the data breach, CAMC posted a notice of the incident on its website. Additionally, on February 14, 2025, CAMC began sending breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice sent to Vermont residents, CAMC is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and 24 months of complimentary credit monitoring services.
