WHAT HAPPENED?

Recently, Riley Pope & Laney announced that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive personal identifiable information and protected health information in its systems may have been accessed and acquired. According to the breach notice, on August 11, 2024, Riley Pope & Laney became aware of suspicious activity on its network.1 As a result, Riley Pope & Laney launched an investigation to determine the nature of the incident.

Through its investigation, Riley Pope & Laney confirmed that sensitive personal information in its systems may have been viewed and taken by an unauthorized third party between August 11 and August 12, 2024. As a result, Riley Pope & Laney began a review of the data to determine what information had been impacted as well as identify the specific individuals affected.  On December 10, 2024, Riley Pope & Laney completed this review. While the information impacted varies depending on the individual, the type of information potentially exposed includes:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Address
  • Date of birth
  • Driver’s license number
  • Individual taxpayer identification number
  • Financial account information
  • Medical information
  • Health insurance information

 

On February 12, 2025, Riley Pope & Laney posted a notice of the incident on its website. On the same date, Riley Pope & Laney began mailing breach notification letters to impacted individuals. Based on the breach notice filed with the Attorney General of Maine, Riley Pope & Laney is providing affected individuals with a list of the specific types of sensitive information impacted and 12 months of complementary credit monitoring services.
